Key points

  • The Adelaide Convention Centre East Wing won the award in the 'Buildings (Large Projects)' category
  • Bellbird Retreat won the award in the 'Buildings (Small Projects)' category
  • InfraBuild Steel Centre's Hand Safety Headlight Team won the Improvement Initiative Award

Aurecon's Adelaide Convention Centre was among the projects celebrated for their innovative and best-in-class use of steel across a number of awards categories.

The Adelaide Convention Centre East Wing has taken out the ASI Excellence Award in the 'Buildings (Large Projects)' category at the 2018 ASI National Excellence Awards.

Held on 5 December at the Hyatt Regency in Sydney, the ASI Awards celebrated and promoted the best in innovation and quality in the steel sector and showcased the best project, products, programs and services offered across the entire steel supply chain.

Constructed by Aurecon, the Adelaide Convention Centre East Wing was praised by judges as being "a highly innovative structure that harnesses the benefits of structural steel to deliver an exemplar result".

The East Wing overcame numerous design challenges with innovative and cost-effective solutions that demonstrated excellence in the use of steel.

“The Centre features a striking geometric façade made possible by the structural steel skeleton, gives rise to an imposing building," said the judges. "The structural steel project is a most cost-effective solution, which may not be achievable in any other construction material.”

Of the other award categories presented on the night, Bellbird Retreat, a 67sqm weekend get-away entered by Steendyk, took out the award for 'Buildings (Small Projects)'. Custom designed and fabricated from weathering steel, the corrugation on the roof allowed for the use of a single span with unsupported cantilevered eaves. This provided fire protection for the house, which is situated in a fire-prone region, by eliminating the need for traditional combustible timber rafters without sacrificing on aesthetic sensibilities.

The Sandra Donovan Sound Shell in Manjimup, WA, won the award for 'Steel Clad Structures' and the WestConnex Concord Rd to M4 West On‐Ramp took out the 'Engineering Projects' award.
