Key points

  • InfraBuild is the Gold Sponsor of November’s AusRAIL 2018 conference in Canberra
  • Australia's rail sector contributes $26b to Australia's economy each year (1.6 per cent of GDP), creating over 140,000 jobs nationally
  • InfraBuild is the largest manufacturer and supplier of rail, and supplier of the Traklok Steel Sleeper system in Australia

InfraBuild has been named as Gold Sponsor of the AusRAIL 2018 conference and exhibition.

The theme of this year’s conference, ‘Rail – For a Better Future’, is apt given the unprecedented levels of investment currently being witnessed in passenger and freight rail. Around Australia, state and federal governments are intensifying their efforts to unlock the economic and social potential in improved mobility and reduced journey times made possible by rail.

According to the Australasian Railway Association (ARA) Deloitte Access Economics report Value of Rail – The Contribution of Rail in Australia released at the AusRAIL PLUS 2017 conference, the contribution of the rail sector to Australia’s economy was approximately $26 billion a year (1.6 per cent of GDP), creating over 140,000 jobs nationally.

Australian-produced, processed and supplied steel plays a critical role in this nation-building infrastructure. InfraBuild (formerly LIBERTY OneSteel) has supplied thousands of kilometres of rail along with structural and reinforcing steel, essential in the construction of tunnels, bridges, stations and the supporting infrastructure for all rail projects.

In New South Wales and Victoria, major projects are underway to improve access to transport and reduce journey times for commuters, with metro projects, urban and regional rail improvements and Victoria’s extensive Level Crossing Removal project all in progress. In Melbourne, InfraBuild has scaled up to supply 22,500 tonnes of prefabricated cages for the Melbourne Metro project, the biggest prefabrication project the company has ever undertaken in Australia. In regional Victoria, InfraBuild has supplied 3000 tonnes of rail to the Ballarat Line Upgrade project.

InfraBuild will soon complete supply of 73,000 tonnes of rail to the Adelaide – Tarcoola Rail Upgrade and 14,000 tonnes of rail to the Parkes to Narromine section of the Inland Rail project.

Connecting Melbourne with Brisbane via regional Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, the Inland Rail has been described as a ‘once-in-a-generation’ project to complete the spine of the national freight network. In New South Wales, InfraBuild will supply 14,000 tonnes of rail to the Parkes to Narromine section in preparation for the construction of this vital section of the Inland Rail. In 2019, delivery of 23,000 tonnes of steel will commence for the Narrabri to North Star section of the Inland Rail, also in New South Wales.

Major projects such as South Australia’s Adelaide to Tarcoola Rail Upgrade and the Torrens Rail Junction Project, successfully completed in 2018, have demonstrated the value in a high-capacity, integrated, highly skilled and collaborative Australian steel supply chain led by InfraBuild.

The AusRAIL 2018 conference takes place in Canberra from 27–28 November
