  • Lendlease's Barangaroo South named 2018 Australian Development of the Year
  • The project also won the InfraBuild-sponsored Best Mixed Use Development Award
  • InfraBuild has supplied 45,000 tonnes of steel for the Barangaroo precinct

Lendlease’s Barangaroo South development took out the Australian Development of the Year along with InfraBuild’s Best Mixed Use Development at this year’s awards.

Two Lendlease projects that have transformed the western side of Sydney’s CBD were the big winners at the 2018 Property Council of Australia’s Innovation and Excellence Awards held this month.

Barangaroo South won five awards including the Property Council’s blue ribbon award for Development of the Year 2018 sponsored by Rider Levett Bucknall. The project also won the InfraBuild-sponsored (formerly LIBERTY OneSteel) Best Mixed Use Development Award, which was presented to Lendlease’s Rob Deck, Managing Director, Barangaroo South, by InfraBuild’s Customer and Market Relationship Manager, Rob Johnson.

Barangaroo South’s impressive awards haul reflects the impact the development has had in opening up an under-utilised part of Sydney’s CBD as a new community of office, retail and residential space, and the leadership it has demonstrated in advanced workplace design and sustainability.

Barangaroo’s now-completed three imposing commercial towers, each resting on three-storey podiums, have been designed to accommodate 23,000 workers and feature more than 80 restaurants, cafes and retail outlets. One hundred and fifty-nine apartments contained within two new low-rise waterfront buildings were released in August 2013, the first of 900 apartments that will house approximately 2,000 residents on completion.

Lendlease says its goal for Barangaroo is for it to be “the first precinct of its size in the world to be climate positive – that is, to be carbon neutral, water positive and to generate zero waste. Already, 89 per cent of all the on-site waste is recycled, reused or repurposed (as a comparison, the average commercial building food court recycles only 25 per cent of its waste).”

The precinct has been awarded a Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) Six Star Green Star – Communities rating, the highest available.

InfraBuild has played a major role during the 4.5-year supply period and has continued to do so in subsequent phases of the development. David Zorzi of InfraBuild Construction Solutions (formerly LIBERTY OneSteel Reinforcing) said the company had supplied more than 45,000 tonnes of reinforcing steel for the completed phases of the precinct, of which 17 per cent was supplied and prefabricated products. All product was delivered with ACRS certification.

“Barangaroo South’s sheer scale and its CBD location made this a complex project and required detailed collaboration between InfraBuild Construction Solutions and the project’s construction partners,” David said. “We put in place various processes to ensure we met a 20 per cent reduction in our embodied carbon for reinforcing steel as part of the precinct-wide objective of a 20 per cent reduction in embodied carbon, which contributed to the overall 6 Star Green Star rating the project was able to secure.”

Lendlease’s Rob Deck said the company was thrilled to win the Australian Development of the Year Award, which he called New South Wales’ top property honour:

“This award is recognition of the work of thousands of people who have brought this vision to life in this high-quality, globally attractive, mixed-use precinct that is literally changing the face of Sydney and setting new global benchmarks in sustainable living,” he said.

Property Council of Australia Chief Executive Ken Morrison added his praise for the Barangaroo South development, which he said “has recalibrated the way Australians think about precinct-scale urban renewal.

“Lendlease has combined iconic buildings designed by acclaimed architects with world-leading sustainability initiatives that have transformed entire supply chains and challenged large tenants to embrace green business practices,” Morrison said.

InfraBuild is proud to have sponsored the Best Mixed Use Development Award at this year’s awards and congratulates Lendlease and the rest of this year’s award winners and nominees.
