Changes to Australian Standards to Better Utilise Higher Strength Reinforcing Steels (Sep 2021)

13 July 2026

This paper outlines how updates to AS 3600 and AS/NZS 4671 now support the design and specification of steels above 500 MPa. These changes reflect advances in material performance and respond to the need for more efficient, lower embodied carbon construction.

By allowing higher strength steels to be used more effectively, the revised Standards support reduced material use while maintaining safety, reliability and design consistency.
