SENSE 600®: Helping Mirvac’s 55 Pitt Street Project Achieve Sustainability Goals

14 April 2026

At InfraBuild, we are proud to play a part in Mirvac’s 55 Pitt Street project, one of Sydney’s most exciting new developments. This 55-storey building, which will include premium commercial and retail spaces, is not just about creating iconic architecture; it is also about making a significant contribution to sustainability.

The 55 Pitt Street project, developed by Mirvac, is targeting key sustainability goals, including using 25% recycled content in major materials and for the building’s upfront carbon emissions to be at least 40% less than those of a reference building.  To support this vision, InfraBuild’s innovative SENSE 600® reinforcing steel which is produced from 100% scrap steel was offered. SENSE 600®, produced at InfraBuild’s local mills in Melbourne and Sydney, SENSE 600® is both environmentally friendly and fully recyclable at the end of its lifecycle, perfectly aligning with circular economy principles.

What Makes SENSE 600® Special?

SENSE 600® is a high-strength steel bar in non-standard, smaller diameters, that delivers the same performance as traditional steel but is lighter and more efficient. By replacing heavier steel bars with this innovative product, Mirvac has been able to reduce the amount of steel used in the 55 Pitt Street project. This has helped the development achieve its sustainability targets without compromising on strength or safety.

The reduction in steel required together with the production from 100% scrap steel means that there was a 39% reduction in embodied carbon when SENSE 600® was used in place of standard reinforcing steel bars.

Real Results in Sustainability

The use of SENSE 600® has already had a positive impact on reducing the project’s carbon footprint. In the columns of the building alone, the switch from traditional steel to SENSE 600® saved over 38% in column reinforcement embodied carbon, bringing the project closer to its overall sustainability goals.

After seeing the success in the columns, Mirvac and the project’s engineers decided to expand the use of SENSE 600® to the building’s beams. This additional step will save 270 tonnes of steel and reduce the project’s carbon footprint by a further 800 tonnes. This proves that every part of a construction project can contribute to a more sustainable future.

Looking Ahead: A More Sustainable Future for Construction

The success of SENSE 600® in the 55 Pitt Street project shows how innovation in materials can drive significant environmental benefits. This is just the beginning. InfraBuild’s commitment to sustainability will continue to support projects that are not only built to last but also built with the planet in mind.

Mirvac’s 55 Pitt Street is setting a new standard for how large-scale developments can meet both performance and sustainability goals, and we are excited to be part of it.
