Customised rib pattern to reduce development lengths for 600 MPa reinforcing steels (Oct 2024)

13 July 2026

Higher strength steel creates new opportunities for material efficiency, but design constraints can limit the full benefit.

This research explores how a customised rib pattern improves the bond between 600 MPa reinforcing steel and concrete, allowing shorter development lengths than currently required by Australian Standards. By addressing this constraint, the approach enables greater material savings and improved constructability.

The findings show that optimised bar design can unlock further reductions in steel use and embodied carbon, supporting more efficient structural design with SENSE 600®.
