Embodied Emissions Study plus Sustainability and Durability Optimised Materials Specification and Design on an Australian Transport Infrastructure Project (Sep 2025)

13 July 2026

Reducing embodied carbon starts in the design phase.

This study examines how early-stage material selection and design decisions can significantly reduce emissions on a major Australian transport infrastructure project. It evaluates a range of lower embodied carbon materials, including high strength reinforcing steel, to determine their impact on performance, constructability and supply.

The findings show that integrating sustainability into design from the outset delivers meaningful emissions reductions without compromising project outcomes.
