InfraBuild SENSE 600® recognised for sustainable steel innovation

19 September 2025

Our SENSE 600® reinforcing bar has been recognised as Newcastle Project of the Year at Engineers Australia Awards.

InfraBuild, together with research partners Monash University and UNSW, has been recognised at the 2025 Engineers Australia Excellence Awards, winning Newcastle Project of the Year for our SENSE 600® reinforcing bar.

Raising the bar in reinforcing steel

SENSE 600® is a new reinforcing bar helping our customers lower their Scope 3 emissions. Using up to 16.7% less raw material to produce a product with the same load capacity and made from 100% scrap, SENSE 600® can deliver a lower embodied carbon solution of up to 39%, than our 500N reinforcing steel.

By enabling less steel to be used without compromising strength, SENSE 600® represents an exciting step forward for sustainable construction.

Designed for seamless adoption

Importantly, SENSE 600® has been developed to fit seamlessly into existing industry practice, conforming to Australian Standards. We also offer software and conversion tables to simplify specification. This makes the transition to stronger, lower-emission rebar straightforward for designers, builders and contractors.

A collaborative achievement

Sharmy Francis, Innovation Manager at InfraBuild said the award underscores the value of industry–university collaboration.

“By combining InfraBuild’s steelmaking and product expertise with the research capabilities of Monash University and UNSW, we have collectively been able to deliver an innovation that benefits both the construction sector and the environment,” Sharmy said.

“InfraBuild is proud to lead the way in creating sustainable solutions for Australia’s infrastructure future. SENSE 600® is just one example of how we are reshaping steel for a low-carbon world.”
