InfraBuild is building a sustainable future for its workforce through a new cadet program that will share knowledge and create leadership opportunities for talented new starters.
The two-year program is being piloted at InfraBuild’s East Maitland and Wetherill Park recycling facilities and involves cadets rotating across InfraBuild’s various recycling sites to experience a variety of roles whilst attaining a formal qualification.
Each cadet has a structured development plan that includes defined tasks, activities, and training. They will also spend time with the Safety and Environment, Commercial and Human Resources teams.
Initially, cadets will gain valuable work experience in operations, trading, transport, and support services before commencing TAFE studies in their chosen field. They will be given time during work hours to study and complete the certificate coursework.
InfraBuild handles more than 1.4 million tonnes of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal every year, distributing it to InfraBuild’s Australian steel mills and other customers for re-use – providing a sustainable alternative to landfill. InfraBuild also has a large scrap metal network that offers local recycling solutions across Australia.
Chris Morgan, General Manager Recycling, said the cadet program was building a talent pipeline into the recycling business, particularly in trading and operational roles.
“The program will allow us to build capability by growing our own talent and ensuring that employees can adapt to different aspects of our recycling operations,” Mr Morgan said.
“It has been designed so cadets can move across recycling sites on planned rotations and undertake roles which carry real responsibility in a structured environment while attaining a formal qualification.”
Senior leaders also act as mentors throughout the life of the two-year program. They are involved in cadet development plans and will undergo training and regular coaching sessions.
With 100 years of continuous operation, InfraBuild is Australia’s largest vertically integrated steel manufacturing, distribution, and recycling business. So, to ensure cadets receive a well-rounded experience, they will also undertake site visits outside of their placements and gain exposure to the wider InfraBuild busines.
InfraBuild CEO and Managing Director, Vik Bansal, applauded the enthusiasm and participation of the cadets.
“Recycling is critical to our aim to decarbonise the steel industry and nation building in Australia. Through this program, the cadets will get a glimpse at the very rewarding careers that are available within the industry,” Mr Bansal said.
“Our people are very passionate about what they do and it’s terrific that they’re able to share some of their talents, knowledge and expertise and hopefully encourage young people to consider the career pathways available in the steel industry.”
Towards the end of their two-year placement, cadets will present to the Recycling Lead team and share their experiences at career fairs before transitioning into full-time employment.
