When many people think about steelmaking, they imagine an industry that has not changed much in decades. The reality at InfraBuild today, and the future we are building for tomorrow, looks very different.
Every time I visit one of our sites, I see evidence of this change. Digital systems are monitoring production in real time. Robotics are helping us with tasks that used to be manual and higher risk. Artificial intelligence is supporting precision and efficiency. These technologies are no longer ideas on a drawing board, they are part of daily operations across our business, from steel recycling and manufacturing through to reinforcing and distribution.
A new kind of workplace
This shift is creating a workplace that is as advanced and technology-driven as any modern sector. We still rely on the expertise of steelmakers and operators, but we now also need data scientists, automation engineers, software developers and environmental specialists.
For graduates and skilled employees, this opens up a new kind of career. At InfraBuild, you don’t have to choose between joining what some might still see as a traditional industry or a high-tech one. Here, the two go together. That combination is what will allow Australian industry to compete and thrive in the years ahead.
Technology and sustainability go together
Technology is only part of the transformation. Sustainability is the other. Our business model is built on recycling scrap into new steel using electric arc furnaces. That process already avoids landfill, conserves natural resources and lowers emissions compared to traditional methods.
On top of that, we are developing new products like SENSE 600®, a lower embodied carbon reinforcement solution that helps our customers reduce their Scope 3 emissions. This is where technology and sustainability meet: smarter processes, new product design, and a clear focus on helping the construction industry deliver lower carbon outcomes.
The role of leadership
Of course, technology and products alone are not enough. None of this works without people. It takes skilled, motivated teams to bring innovation to life. That’s why I see it as a core leadership responsibility to create a workplace where talent can grow and succeed.
Our graduate program is one way we are doing this. Being ranked number three nationally in the Manufacturing and R&D category was recognition that we are investing deliberately in the workforce of the future, competing with the best employers in the country to develop the next generation of leaders.
Why it matters for Australia
Steel has always been at the heart of Australia’s growth. It has built our infrastructure, powered our transport networks and supported our energy systems. What has changed is how we make it, and what that means for the jobs of the future.
For Australia, this is a chance to keep a strong industrial base while creating high-value, technology-rich careers in local communities. If we get this right, we will not only make more sustainable steel, but we will also build stronger communities, secure our supply chains and ensure we stay competitive in a fast-moving global market.
A privilege and a responsibility
For me, being part of this transformation is both a privilege and a responsibility. A privilege, because change on this scale is rare. A responsibility, because the decisions we make today will shape opportunities for generations to come.
The future of steel will not look like the past. It will be more digital, more sustainable and more connected. But at its heart, it will still be about people, the people across InfraBuild who recycle, manufacture, design and deliver steel that Australia relies on every day.
At InfraBuild, we are committed to giving those people the technology, the tools and the support they need to succeed. Because by shaping the steel of tomorrow, we are also shaping the future of work and industry in Australia.
Stay safe,
