EPDs key to sustainability credentials

14 March 2017

InfraBuild is setting the agenda by making it easy for organisations to understand the sustainability impact of using steel products in construction projects.

The use of InfraBuild’s (formerly LIBERTY OneSteel) design guides and design advice for minimising the quantities of materials consumed, designs and products for reducing wastage, and a range of material-efficient products such as high-strength and ductile steels can all contribute to projects obtaining up to three Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) Rating Scheme points from the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA).

And further IS Rating Scheme points can be earned by using InfraBuild products that feature an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), such as InfraBuild Construction Solutions’ (formerly LIBERTY OneSteel Reinforcing) reinforcing bar and mesh, which has been supplied to Sydney’s NorthConnex Project. A joint venture partnership between Lendlease and Bouygues, the NorthConnex Project consists of a 9km multi-lane tunnel linking Sydney’s M1 Pacific Motorway at Wahroonga with the Hills M2 Motorway at West Pennant Hills. The $3 billion project will be funded through toll charges and a contribution from the NSW and Australian governments.

Jaclyn Ford, Sustainability Lead at Lendlease Bouygues Joint Venture, said InfraBuild and NorthConnex have worked collaboratively to achieve excellent sustainability outcomes.

“Sustainability is extremely important across all aspects of construction, including procurement and supply chain,” she said. “Lendlease Bouygues Joint Venture (NorthConnex) and InfraBuild have worked closely together to generate accurate material and energy use data, which has contributed to the project’s leading ISCA rating.”

Rob Johnson, InfraBuild Customer and Market Relationship Manager, said InfraBuild was committed to pursuing a high standard of sustainability throughout its operations and product and service offerings to the construction industry.

“Great sustainability practices underpin excellence in business and project outcomes, as demonstrated by our collaboration with the NorthConnex team,” he said.

A brochure is coming soon that details how InfraBuild’s EPDs and service offering can assist with gaining both IS rating scheme points and Green Building Council of Australia Green Star points.
