Helicopter installation at Laverton Steel Mill shows what happens when planning meets innovation

7 May 2026

At InfraBuild’s Laverton Steel Mill, a routine installation became something worth stopping to watch.

Extraction fans needed to be installed on the Rolling Mill roof. Typically, that would mean a large crane, multiple support vehicles, and a complex setup on site.

This time, the team took a different path. They brought in a helicopter.

Faster, simpler, more controlled

What could have been a time-intensive lift was completed in a fraction of the time.

Four lifts were completed in around an hour. Each one took just a few minutes. There was no need for crane mobilisation, counterweights or additional site congestion.

Just as importantly, operations around the work continued with minimal disruption. It was a simple idea, executed well.

Safety at the centre

While the method was different, the fundamentals did not change. Every step was planned and controlled.

Exclusion zones were clearly defined. Work areas were managed tightly. Contractors were coordinated, and supervision remained consistent from setup through to final placement.

The result was not just a faster lift, but a well-managed one.

Backed by strong planning

For Anthony Micallef, Executive General Manager Manufacturing at InfraBuild, the outcome reflects the way teams across InfraBuild are approaching their work.

“This is a great example of our teams thinking differently and backing it up with strong planning and execution,” said Anthony. “We are always looking for ways to improve how we operate, while maintaining the highest safety standards.”

Delivering smarter outcomes

By rethinking traditional methods, the team reduced time on site, limited disruption to operations, and maintained strong control of critical risks.

It reflects how InfraBuild is improving productivity and operational efficiency by rethinking how work is planned and delivered.
