Strengthening infrastructure: Enhancing reliability at the rolling mill
3 February 2025

As part of our ongoing commitment to operational excellence, our Rolling Mill has undergone a critical upgrade to key infrastructure, ensuring greater reliability and efficiency. With corrosion impacting our roller table and the billet descaler, this project was an opportunity to implement long-term improvements that enhance durability, safety, and maintenance accessibility.
Addressing the challenge
Over time, corrosion had weakened essential structures, increasing maintenance demands and operational downtime. The existing design also made cleaning and grease system upkeep difficult, leading to premature wear.
Toby Cregan, Mechanical Draftsman from our Rooty Hill site, explains:
“This wasn’t just about replacing equipment—it was about engineering a more resilient solution. By tackling corrosion at its source, we’ve extended the lifespan of these critical assets.”
Engineering a more robust solution
Rather than a simple replacement, the team delivered significant upgrades, including:
- Stronger sub-frame design: Hot-dip galvanized for enhanced corrosion protection.
- Optimised roller table drainage: Reducing scale buildup and improving wash-down efficiency.
- Upgraded centralised greasing system: Relocated valve blocks for better accessibility, reducing maintenance needs and improving equipment longevity.
Toby shares:
“We reimagined how the system should function, focusing on making it not just more robust but also easier to maintain.”
The comprehensive upgrade included:
- New sub-frames for the roller table, billet descaler, and stand floor grating
- A new structural platform behind the roller table
- New housings and support structures for key measurement equipment
- Refurbished crossover stairs and billet descaler
- Installation of stainless steel tubing for the centralised greasing system
The improvements have already demonstrated tangible advantages:
- Enhanced safety and reliability, reducing downtime risks.
- Lower maintenance demands, thanks to a more resilient design.
- Extended asset lifespan, supporting long-term operational efficiency.
Toby also highlighted the teamwork involved:
“This was a true collaboration between engineering, production, and installation teams. The result is a more reliable and efficient system that will benefit operations for years to come.”
Through smart design, strategic procurement, and efficient project execution, this successful upgrade underscores our commitment to delivering high-performance solutions. By strengthening our core infrastructure, we continue to ensure safer, more efficient, and sustainable operations.
