From Day One: Ann’s Graduate Experience in Data Science and Analytics

2 July 2025

Graduate role: Data Science and Analytics
Studied: Bachelor of Data Science and Decisions (Honours) at UNSW

“I expected to feel invisible. Instead, I felt seen, supported and valued.”

For Ann Nguyen, stepping into her graduate role at InfraBuild wasn’t about waiting quietly in the background. It was about hitting the ground running.

“What genuinely surprised me was how committed the business is to graduate development,” she says. “Even before my start date, I was welcomed in, introduced to mentors and senior leaders, and taken on a tour of one of our major manufacturing sites. I could see how my work would connect to real outcomes.”

That early exposure made an impression, but it’s the culture that has really stood out.

“People here take time. Whether it’s a hello in the hallway or a teammate offering support, I’ve always felt included.”

Turning data into real outcomes

Ann’s work as a data science graduate is about more than just numbers. It’s about finding insights that make a difference.

“One of the most rewarding parts of my role is knowing that the work I do directly supports teams across the business. I’ve delivered reports that influence decisions, and that’s incredibly motivating.”

She’s also enjoyed applying what she learnt at uni in a practical way. “Everything I studied has been relevant, but this role pushes me further, especially in understanding how to apply data to a complex industry like steel.”

Her recent project involved modernising a key business report using SQL and Power BI.

“I rebuilt it using our updated data architecture. The result? Better accuracy, better efficiency, and more useful insights for the teams that use it every day. It’s great knowing something I built is having an impact.”

Learning and growing every day

Ann says she’s been well supported from the start by her mentor, her team, and the wider business.

“My mentor checks in regularly. She’s not just focused on tasks, but on my overall experience. She helps me grow and connects me with the right people when I need to learn something new.”

Ann’s team also plays a big role. “They’re generous with their knowledge and give constructive feedback that helps me improve.”

Still, like many grads, Ann has faced moments of self-doubt.

“It’s a big step going from uni to real-world problems that matter. But I’ve tackled that by staying reflective, listening to feedback, and celebrating wins along the way. That mindset has helped me build confidence.”

The view from here

Between solving data challenges and learning from her team, Ann finds time to appreciate the little things, like the view from the office.

“Sometimes I look out the window just to reset. It’s those moments that help keep the energy up.”

In her words: the culture

“The culture perfectly reflects the ‘we are one and stronger together’ philosophy. Everyone, from execs to grads, invests in each other’s success. We’re working together to build a sustainable future through steel.”
