InfraBuild has taken delivery of two new Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) bowls at its Laverton Melt Shop in Victoria, marking a key investment in the site’s future steelmaking capability.
The new bowls are part of a two-bowl rotation system. One bowl remains in operation while the other is re-lined offline and exchanged roughly every six weeks. This setup helps maintain steady production while improving equipment availability.
The new EAF bowls are designed to accommodate a larger tap mass, which gives the Laverton Melt Shop the ability to increase output up to 1 Mtpa. It supports InfraBuild’s ongoing efforts to produce more sustainable steel in Australia while maintaining reliability, efficiency and readiness for future production requirements.
InfraBuild CEO Francisco Irazusta said the new bowls are an important step in preparing Laverton for what’s ahead.
“Investing in our manufacturing assets is how we continue to grow, improve efficiency and meet increasing demand for more sustainable steel in Australia. This new EAF bowls are one of the critical upgrades that will help Laverton deliver on its future 1Mtn production targets,” Francisco said.
Expected to be in service from October 2025, the new bowls add flexibility to the lower embodied carbon steelmaking process and supports InfraBuild’s long-term sustainability plans while delivering more sustainable steel and support a sustainable path to Australia and by Australians.
In Sydney, InfraBuild will lift capacity to 680,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) this year and has commenced studies, including identifying any required regulatory approvals, on the optimal path to reach 1 Mtpa.
InfraBuild operates two Electric Arc Furnace sites in Australia. Both sites use EAF technology to recycle scrap metal and produce steel for Australian infrastructure and construction projects and other sectors.
This scrap based EAF technology emits approximately 70% lower CO2 emissions per tonne of steel than traditional blast furnace methods according to worldsteel 2023 data.
This latest equipment delivery, together with the significant sustainability driven innovations develop under its SENSE Solutions reinforcing products, underscores InfraBuild’s ongoing commitment to modern, safe and more sustainable steel production.
