Sydney Steel Mill builds momentum on psychosocial safety

10 December 2025

Sydney Steel Mill has continued its work to strengthen psychosocial safety, hosting its third workshop with the University of Wollongong as part of a major research partnership.

This session brought together female team members from across the Melt Shop, Rolling Mill and Administration teams to share their experiences and explore workplace factors that influence wellbeing and safety. The discussion was guided by University of Wollongong facilitators using the PHReD tool, which helps identify organisational drivers of psychosocial risk.

The group later presented their key insights to the Sydney Senior Leadership Team, helping shape the next phase of work.

A more proactive approach

Health, Safety and Environment Manager Simon Morgan said the partnership is helping the site take a more systematic approach to understanding psychosocial risk.

“This collaboration is helping us look beyond individual wellbeing programs and focus on the organisational factors that influence how people feel and perform at work. It is an important shift in how we think about safety.”

Creating space for honest conversations

Senior Engineer Ivonne Goertz said the workshop created a supportive space for women across the site to share their views.

“The discussions were constructive and meaningful. We appreciate everyone who contributed and supported the session.”

Listening and acting

General Manufacturing Manager Giyas Mohammed said the insights will guide future improvements.

“I want to thank our female team members for their openness and feedback. Psychosocial safety is just as critical as physical safety. It affects how confident people feel to speak up and how well teams work together.

“We are committed to listening, understanding and acting. This work gives us a clearer view of where we can improve the environment so everyone feels supported at Sydney Steel Mill.”
