This World Environment Day, we’re celebrating the work of Ivonne Goertz, our Senior Environmental Engineer at the Sydney Steel Mill. Her focus is on making sure our operations remain safe, sustainable and aligned with community expectations.
With more than three years at InfraBuild, Ivonne plays a key role in managing air and water quality, waste reduction and resource efficiency. Each day starts with reviewing reports and data, followed by site assessments and environmental sampling. From surface water and soil to air quality, she ensures compliance while identifying opportunities to improve how we operate.
Ivonne’s passion for protecting natural systems inspired her to study Environmental Engineering. “I’ve always believed in using resources wisely and preserving the environment for future generations,” she says.
A standout project she led was the introduction of native bee hotels in nearby bushland. The team wanted to encourage pollinators around the site, and the results exceeded expectations. Along with the bees came a range of beneficial insects, helping build a stronger local ecosystem.
The theme of this year’s World Environment Day, Our Land. Our Future., is a reminder that restoration begins with practical, consistent action. Ivonne’s work is a clear example of how environmental care and industrial performance can go together.
