Key Information

  • ASI SA 2018 Awards Steel Clad Structures category won by Coopers Brewery’s malting facility at Regency Park in Adelaide, constructed by Ahrens Group
  • 340 tonnes of hot-dipped galvanized steel was used in the project
  • InfraBuild Steel Centre delivered an integrated supply solution: nesting of steel for processing, managing offcuts and provision of material test certification for all products

A restricted site footprint and extensive galvanizing requirements made Coopers Brewery’s malting facility in SA a complex challenge that was successfully accomplished by Ahrens Group with support from InfraBuild Steel Centre.

Coopers Brewery’s malting facility at Regency Park in Adelaide, constructed by Ahrens Group, has been awarded winner of the Australian Steel Institute’s (ASI) Steel Clad Structures award in the 2018 Steel Excellence Awards for South Australia.

The $65 million in-house maltings production plant is a purpose-built development at the brewer’s existing facility. The 13,000sqm plant includes six barley and six malt silos, each measuring 25m high and 8m in diameter and capable of holding 500 tonnes of barley or malt. At full capacity, the new plant is capable of producing 54,000 tonnes of malt a year.

The silos were constructed with 340 tonnes of hot-dipped galvanized steel which was considered to the most suitable for installation and for the life of the asset.

InfraBuild Steel Centre (formerly LIBERTY OneSteel Metalcentre) worked hard to demonstrate its capability to Ahrens Group, initially winning constituent packages before winning a total integrated supply solution. That integrated solution included nesting of steel materials for processing and managing the steel offcuts, as well as providing material test certification for all products.

Coopers Brewery Managing Director Dr Tim Cooper said Ahrens Group has built a facility that is arguably the most technically advanced in the world. Construction of the facility represents the company’s largest single investment in its 155-year history.

InfraBuild Steel Centre congratulates all the winners of this year’s ASI SA 2018 Steel Awards.
