Setting the standard for the future of construction

20 April 2026

For more than a century, steel has been the backbone of modern life. But with rising construction costs, constrained labour and increasing carbon reduction demands, the expectations of steel are changing and so is InfraBuild.

As we enter a major construction cycle in Australia, customers need partners who understand their challenges, and who can innovate and adapt to improve productivity outcomes. InfraBuild is committed to being that partner, and that’s why we launched our new Sustainable Future Strategy to improve productivity across the construction value chain.

Build more with less, with SENSE

We know that one of the most powerful opportunities for productivity gains starts early with design and specification. When you improve material efficiency, the benefit doesn’t stop with the material, it multiplies.

Take this example. If reinforcing steel is up to 16.7% lighter, it can remove roughly one truck for every five deliveries on a major project. That means fewer loads on the road, less handling, fewer crane lifts, less congestion and faster installation. With less material required, it also means lower embodied carbon. Each effect compounds the next.

InfraBuild will lead a generational transformation in reinforcing steel through a shift from 500mpa baseline to a patented 600mpa engineered reinforcing platform as the new standard throughout 2027.

This is not a product extension but a platform strategically combining proprietary bar geometry and advanced steel chemistry to unlock productivity, reduce embodied carbon and reduce cost through our industrial Australian capability.

Transitioning Australia to SENSE 600® throughout 2027 and investing in Queensland

Many of our customers and partners are already working with SENSE, including Mirvac’s 55 Pitt Street Project. We are now accelerating its adoption across the market and increasing steelmaking capacity to support this growth:

  • Our Laverton Steel Mill in Melbourne is increasing to 1Mt per year by 2028
  • Laverton is also increasing spool coil capacity by 2029
  • Our Sydney Steel Mill in Rooty Hill is increasing to 750kt, with a pathway to 1Mt by 2030

We are also investing in Queensland to support a growing market, including plans for a new distribution centre, bar processing facility, prefabrication and a potential rolling mill.

Investing in our people and supporting a sustainable future

Our talented people are central to the success of our new strategy, so we were pleased to be recognised by industry for our efforts to invest in our people and support global decarbonisation efforts.

We were named one of the Australian Financial Review’s Best Places to Work for 2026 – a significant acknowledgement of the culture, leadership and everyday practices that define InfraBuild across our national operations. We were also pleased to achieve Advanced Recognition through the Mental Health First Aid Australia Workplace Recognition Program, placing the business among a small group of organisations nationally recognised for embedding strong mental health support in the workplace. These awards highlight the steps we’ve taken to support and empower our people and build capability to recognise when someone may need help.

We have also been recognised as a 2026 Sustainability Champion by the World Steel Association (Worldsteel), placing us among a small group of steelmakers globally acknowledged for strong performance across sustainability, transparency and industry leadership.

This recognition reflects consistent action across how we produce steel, how we measure our impact, and how we contribute to advancing standards across the industry.

Closing thoughts

Customers want stronger performance, communities expect lower impact, and industries need partners who can help them do more with less.

InfraBuild is uniquely positioned to lead that change. We are one of Australia’s lowest carbon intensive steel producers and one of the largest recyclers, with a strong distribution and processing footprint.

We have the scale, capability and a talented workforce that will set the standard for productivity that the future of construction will demand.

We look forward to working with you as we build the future.

Stay safe,

Francisco Irazusta
