A new development program Leading Safety is being rolled out across InfraBuild, with the first cohorts already under way. The pilot group from our Newcastle Wire and Newcastle Rod Mills kicked off their six-month learning journey in July, and the second, Steel in Concrete in Victoria, began in October.
The Leading Safety program is designed to give our leaders the practical tools, competency and confidence to effectively manage health and safety on their site.
The program includes a blend of classroom sessions, self-directed learning and social learning support through Workplace.
Bob Kebby, Safety Superintendent at the Newcastle Rod Mill, is the lead facilitator for the first group, together with National HR Manager Ash Cass.
“When I was first approached to be the lead facilitator, I accepted without hesitation,” said Bob.
Each program has a General Manager sponsor who meets with the participants throughout the learning journey. For cohort one this is Mark Lewin – General Manager of Business Development, and for cohort two, it’s Marc Blampied, General Manager of InfraBuild Reinforcing.
Members of our senior leadership and ExCo, including Steve Elliot, Shane Murphy, Fran Nores, Greg Jones, Sean Mannering and Lige Donald have also been sharing their insights with participants through personal video messages.
“When you become a leader, it’s not time to sit back and let your team do the work. You have a responsibility to work hard and practice the art of leadership. It’s through reading widely, listening, learning, sharing, and taking on personal challenges,” said Bob.
“Leadership skills can be taught, but good leaders are recognised for their personal leadership style. And while that doesn’t come naturally for all, developing your authentic leadership style is a task worth taking on”.
