Steel – The Circular Economy at Work

1 March 2023

As I’ve written previously, steel is one of the great examples of the circular economy at work.

In our business, we collect steel scrap, which we then use to manufacture more steel in our electric arc furnaces to supply a diverse range of industries.

During the EAF process, we also generate a by-product called slag, which is also a largely circular process, as it can then be used to make aggregate and road base.

In this month’s InfraBuild email news update (which you can subscribe to here), we feature a piece on the slag we generate being used to renovate the racing surfaces of some of Australia’s most decorated motor racing tracks.

Collaborative initiatives such as this are great examples of how we can work together to pursue a decarbonised future for Australian industry.

Another great initiative featured this month is the work we have done with the Wild Deserts Project to supply fencing to their two large exclusion enclosures, or ‘exclosures’, in the north-west corner of New South Wales within the Sturt National Park.

The fencing keeps protected species safely inside the enclosure and keeps pest species such as rabbits, feral cats and foxes out. Pleasingly, we recently received news that Golden Bandicoot babies have been born in the park for the first time in 100 years.

We also look at some of the key projects our business supplied recently, ranging from nation building transport projects to one of the nation’s most anticipated resort developments.

Our business is driven by our mission to ‘Build futures through sustainable steel’ and these projects provide an insight into the role we play to enable some of the nation’s most important infrastructure.

Finally, we catch up with Chris McGaffin from our ARC branch in Wodonga, who started with us in logistics before progressing to the role of Key Account Manager, where he is working to support customers as they deliver projects across the region.

I hope you enjoy learning more about some of the work we are doing and initiatives we are supporting.

Stay safe,

Dak
